On Dec 19,2015, a group of Rwadese refugees associations put together an unprecedented event to collect money to buy boots for refugee children in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The turnout for this event was beyond the organizers expectations, considering that previous attempts to mobilize the Rwandese community in Belgium to help the refugees in Eastern Congo tend to give rise to unexplained controversies. The idea was simple: boots for Christmas.
In collaboration with AFERWAR-Duterimbere..a Rwandese Women’s refugees association in Eastern DRC, the leadership of SOS Refugees promoted the event, provided the space and the entertainment and people came with what they could afford and put together a nice christmas gift for refugee children in Eatern Congo.
Due to the harsh realities of war in the area it took a while for the package to arrive, but when it did, it was joy all around the jungles of Eastern Congo. The Women of AFERWAR-Duterimbere led by their new President Thacianna MUKARUGOMWA traveled in different areas of the camps distributing the boots and leaving behind smiling faces and joyful and grateful hearts.
The leadership of AFERWAR took the opportunity to express their deepest thanks to the Refugee community in Belgium for daring to break the pattern of forgetting those souls that the world has neglected for the last two decades.
